New Adventures / Matthew Bourne

The Red Shoes

Ahmanson Theatre

Sep 15 – Oct 1, 2017

 American Premiere

A beloved fairytale and Academy Award®-winning movie, The Red Shoes has seduced audiences and inspired generations of dancers with its tale of obsession, possession, and one girl’s dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. Victoria Page lives to dance, but her ambitions become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion.

Matthew Bourne’s magical Double Olivier Award-winning adaptation of the legendary Powell and Pressburger film reunites the team who brought you New Adventures’ worldwide hit, Sleeping Beauty (Ahmanson Theatre, 2013), with sumptuous designs by Lez Brotherston (set and costumes), Paule Constable (lighting), and Paul Groothuis (sound).

This American premiere is set to a new score arranged by Terry Davies using the mesmerizing music of golden-age Hollywood composer, Bernard Herrmann (most famous for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, and Martin Scorsese), whose work ranges from the witty and playfully robust to the achingly romantic and bittersweet.

An intoxicating drama where life imitates art with fateful consequences, The Red Shoes will dazzle your senses and break your heart.

Presented by Center Theatre Group and Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center.

Bright Star

Ahmanson Theatre

Oct 11 – Nov 19, 2017

2016 Outer Critics Circle Award-Winning & 2016 Tony Award®-Nominated Best Musical

From Grammy® winners Steve Martin and Edie Brickell comes Bright Star, the new Broadway musical that brings a fresh breeze to the spring theater season (Charles Isherwood, The New York Times).

Directed by Tony® winner Walter Bobbie and inspired by a real event, this “downright wonderful” (Newsday) original musical tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ‘40s. Literary editor Alice Murphy develops a relationship with a young soldier just home from World War II, awakening her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past—and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives.

Propelled by an ensemble of onstage musicians and dancers, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion, beautiful melodies and powerfully moving performances. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tight in its grasp, Bright Star is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful—and Broadway’s most beautiful show (WABC).

Performance Length: TBA

Something Rotten!

Ahmanson Theatre

Nov 21 – Dec 31, 2017

Welcome to the ‘90s—the 1590s—long before the dawn of premium tickets, star casting, and reminders to turn off your cell phones. Brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom (Tony® nominee Rob McClure and Broadway’s Josh Grisetti) are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard” (Tony nominee Adam Pascal). When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical! But amidst the scandalous excitement of Opening Night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self…and all that jazz.

With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, Something Rotten! is an uproarious dose of pure Broadway fun and an irresistible ode to musicals—those dazzling creations that entertain us, inspire us, and remind us that everything’s better with an exclamation point! From the director of Aladdin and the co-director of The Book of Mormon, Something Rotten! is "Broadway’s big, fat hit!" (The New York Post).

Crazy for You

Ahmanson Theatre

Feb 7 – Mar 18, 2018

Crazy for You scrapes away decades of cabaret and jazz and variety-show interpretations to reclaim the Gershwins' standards, in all their glorious youth, for the dynamism of the stage.Frank Rich, The New York Times

Exclusive Pre-Broadway Production!

Five-time Tony Award® winner Susan Stroman (Show Boat, Contact, The Producers) returns to direct and choreograph an all-new production of the acclaimed musical comedy that launched her Broadway career—Crazy for You. Featuring a hilarious book by two-time Tony nominee Ken Ludwig (Lend Me A Tenor) and a score of showstoppers by George and Ira Gershwin including "I Got Rhythm," "Embraceable You," "Slap That Bass," and "Someone To Watch Over Me," Crazy for You is an irresistibly funny valentine to the American musicals of the 1930s. Welcome to a world of cowboys and showgirls, where a Wall Street guy and a Main Street gal can fall madly in love, put on a show, and dance their way to happiness!

Crazy for You is a raucous musical tale about the power art has to bring life to a community. I am thrilled at the chance to re-discover this great comedy, with the most choreographically-inspiring Gershwin music the world has ever known.

Soft Power

May 3 – Jun 10, 2018

World Premiere

Hilariously provocative, what begins as a contemporary play slowly becomes a play with music set 150 years in the future in this seductive World premiere by Tony Award® winner David Henry Hwang (Yellow Face, M. Butterfly). A beloved East-meets-West musical, China’s 21st-century rise, and a theatre company gala collide to make mayhem—and some beautiful music. Inspired by the West's often ridiculously inauthentic portrayals of Asia, Soft Power is a Center Theatre Group commission and the first collaboration between two of America's great theatre artists: Hwang and Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home).

The Humans

Jun 19 – Jul 29, 2018

Stephen Karam’s The Humans is an uproarious, hopeful, and heartbreaking play that takes place over the course of a family dinner on Thanksgiving. Breaking with tradition, Erik Blake has brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate and give thanks at his daughter’s apartment in Lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside the ramshackle pre-war duplex and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the Blake clan’s deepest fears and greatest follies are laid bare. Our modern age of anxiety is keenly observed, with humor and compassion, in this new American classic that won the 2016 Tony Award® for Best Play.
