Jonn Leguizamo stars in

LATIN HISTORY FOR MORONS

Ahmanson Theatre

Sept 5 – Oct 20, 2019

"A FUNNY AND SURPRISINGLY POIGNANT QUEST FOR THE PERFECT LATINO HERO!"

- THE NEW YORK TIMES

New York Times Critics' Pick

Endless critical and audience acclaim direct from Broadway. A sold-out run at The Public Theater. A record-breaking engagement at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Latin History for Morons, the most totally unique show of the season, reveals America’s unsung heroes, throughout past and present—all unforgettably told by Tony and Emmy Award® winner John Leguizamo, one of the most incisive, insightful, and entertaining personalities onstage today.

Latin History for Morons is inspired by the near total absence of Latinos from his son’s American history books. John Leguizamo embarks on an outrageously funny, frenzied search to find a Latin hero for his son’s school history project. From a mad recap of the Aztec empire to stories of unknown Latin patriots of the Revolutionary War and beyond, Leguizamo breaks down the 3,000 years between the Mayans and Pitbull into 110 irreverent and uncensored minutes above and beyond his unique style.

Birbiglia has a new one.

It’s called The New One.

He’s made you laugh in Sleepwalk With Me (it was a play presented by Nathan Lane, then a movie, THEN a book), My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, and Thank God for Jokes. (He was also really funny in that one season of Orange Is the New Black. And in Billions. And Broad City.) Now he’s at the Ahmanson telling a new story in a new way with the same heart and humor we’ve come to expect. Lin-Manuel Miranda called The New One “as perfect a night as you’re gonna get.” Do not miss The New One. Some people say it’s his best one. (It was John Mulaney. Also Vogue.)

MATTHEW BOURNE'S SWAN LAKE

Ahmanson Theatre

Dec 3, 2019 – Jan 5, 2020

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake returns with a fresh look for the 21st century.

THE SHOW THAT CHANGED THE DANCE LANDSCAPE FOREVER

 Observer

Retaining the iconic elements of the original production loved by millions around the world, Matthew Bourne and award-winning designers Lez Brotherston (set & costumes) and Paule Constable (lighting) will create an exciting reimagining of the classic New Adventures production.

Thrilling, audacious, witty, and emotive, this Swan Lake is perhaps still best known for replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, which shattered conventions, turned tradition upside down, and took the dance world by storm.

Collecting over 30 international accolades including an Olivier Award in the UK and three Tonys® on Broadway, Matthew Bourne’s powerful interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece is a passionate and contemporary Swan Lake for our times.

STING staring in THE LAST SHIP

Ahmanson Theatre

Jan 14 – Feb 16, 2020

HEART-BREAKING, UPLIFTING, INTIMATE, AND UNIVERSAL.

 The Stage

POIGNANT AND POWERFUL…STIRRING STUFF FROM STING.

 Sunday Mirror

The Last Ship is the heartfelt and empowering new musical by multiple Grammy Award®winner Sting.

Featuring original music and lyrics by Sting as well as a few of his best-loved songs—“Island of Souls,” “All This Time,” and “When We Dance”—The Last Ship is coming to Los Angeles after a critically acclaimed Canadian, UK, and Irish tour.

Set in the shipbuilding community in Tyne and Wear, UK, The Last Ship tells the story of a young man who returns home after 17 years at sea. Tensions between past and future flare in both his family and his town. He finds that the local shipyard, around which the community has always revolved, is closing, and no one knows what will come next, only that a half-built ship towers over the terraces of working-class homes. With the engine fired and pistons in motion, picket lines are drawn as the foreman and his wife fight to hold their community together in the face of the gathering storm.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Sting star in this “thrilling and stirring musical” (The Guardian).

Book of Mormon

Ahmanson Theatre

Feb 18 – Mar 29, 2020

The New York Times calls it “the best musical of this century.” The Washington Post says, “It is the kind of evening that restores your faith in musicals.” And Entertainment Weekly says, “Grade A: The funniest musical of all time.” Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show calls it “Genius. Brilliant. Phenomenal.” It’s The Book of Mormon, the nine-time Tony Award®-winning Best Musical. This outrageous musical comedy follows the misadventures of a mismatched pair of missionaries, sent halfway across the world to spread the Good Word. Now with standing room only productions in London, on Broadway, and across North America, The Book of Mormon has truly become an international sensation. Contains explicit language.

1776

Ahmanson Theatre

Jul 21– Aug 23, 2020

Visionary director Diane Paulus reexamines a pivotal moment in American history in this new A.R.T. at Harvard University and Roundabout Theatre Company production of the Tony Award®-winning musical 1776.

They knew they would make history, but not what history would make of them. Fed up with living under the tyranny of British rule, John Adams attempts to persuade his fellow members of the Continental Congress to vote in favor of American Independence and sign the Declaration. But how much is he willing to compromise in the pursuit of freedom? And to whom does that freedom belong?

In 1776, not only does Diane Paulus promise to bring an exciting perspective to the musical, but also to a critical point in this country’s history—when our Founding Fathers solidified America’s independence. I can’t imagine a better time to revisit this work than as our country nears our next presidential election.

Soft Power

May 3 – Jun 10, 2018

World Premiere

Hilariously provocative, what begins as a contemporary play slowly becomes a play with music set 150 years in the future in this seductive World premiere by Tony Award® winner David Henry Hwang (Yellow Face, M. Butterfly). A beloved East-meets-West musical, China’s 21st-century rise, and a theatre company gala collide to make mayhem—and some beautiful music. Inspired by the West's often ridiculously inauthentic portrayals of Asia, Soft Power is a Center Theatre Group commission and the first collaboration between two of America's great theatre artists: Hwang and Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home).

The Humans

Jun 19 – Jul 29, 2018

Stephen Karam’s The Humans is an uproarious, hopeful, and heartbreaking play that takes place over the course of a family dinner on Thanksgiving. Breaking with tradition, Erik Blake has brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate and give thanks at his daughter’s apartment in Lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside the ramshackle pre-war duplex and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the Blake clan’s deepest fears and greatest follies are laid bare. Our modern age of anxiety is keenly observed, with humor and compassion, in this new American classic that won the 2016 Tony Award® for Best Play.
